Focke, Wilhelm H. 1878 – Bremen – 1974. Standing boy in the dunes looking at a cloud. Preliminary study for the painting (Hadré 49). 1940s. Gouache and watercolor/cardboard, inscribed on verso a.o. ”Vorstudie f. das große Bild f. Edwin Hadré” as well as signed, 60 x 45.5 cm, in the lower quarter backed tear, Hadré 1317, enclosed sheet with pencil studies on both sides to the same motif, unsigned, 40 x 46.5 cm, Hadré 1298, each corner bumped, unframed.- In the examination of the human body Focke is initially academically oriented, but develops until the 1920s away from this ideal view to more reality of life. With his numerous nude and movement studies, he creates the basis for later translations into painting – especially the motif world of young people in the context of nature, the devotion to the power of the elements.
