A stately deerstalker, Germany around 1860, iron, silver and leather. An outstanding example, probably from the circle of Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Prince of Prussia (1794 – 1863). Silver hilt with oak leaves, parrying element in the shape of deer legs, grip with sculpted lion’s head, guard with stag and oak leaves. Blade of fine Damascus steel, marked ”Knechts Damast”, very fine etched decoration on both sides, partially gilt. Av crowned monogram ”Fr. Pr. v. Pr”, above a huntsman with a hound on scrollwork. Rv uninterpreted coat of arms reed, above hunting motif with tendrils, rocailles etc. Leather-covered scabbard with silver fittings, carrying knob in the shape of a hound, mount for by-knife (missing). Overall an extremely finely made piece, probably a gift of honor. Overall length 72.5 cm
