Bottle of cognac, so-called ”Rommel-Schnapps”, mid-20th century. The troops of the German Africa Corps under Field Marshal Erwin Rommel captured a British beverage warehouse with barrels of whisky, rum, gin and cognac in 1942. The booty was shipped to Italy in 1944, where it fell into the hands of American soldiers. The GIs decanted the spirits into bottles, which were later stored in Linz, Austria. In 1979 the remaining stock was auctioned for the first time in Frankfurt. The label on the front is rubbed but still legible, on the back only 30% preserved. Closure of bottle reinforced with scotch tape or similar, fill level not complete. Contents not checked. H. 31 cm
