Pantalone and Colombina, Popov Manufactory, near Moscow, Russia, 1820-1850, Columbina seated with a pug on her lap, holding a mask in her right hand and stroking the beard of the standing Pantalone with her left, on a naturalistic base with floral appliqués, polychrome painted and ornamental gilding, chipped, h. 17 cm, This porcelain group of the well-known Commedia dell’arte figures is based on the original Meissen group by J.J. Kändler circa 1736. Kändler’s group is based on an engraving by Christoph Weigel from 1723 showing a troupe of Commedia performers.
