Anonymous marine painter of the 2nd H. of the 19th century Captains picture of the barque Matador from Brake.1886. oil / canvas, unsigned, u. inscribed and dated Matador Bremen H. Jordan 1886, 61 x 88 cm, verso at the right edge a patch doubliert, restored, restusch., framed 66.5 x 94.5 cm.- The Matador was the largest ever built in Brake wooden sailing ship. She was launched in 1884 for the shipping company Gildemeister & Ries. Her maiden voyage took her from Brake to Cardiff in 1884, and in 1886 she sailed under Captain Hermann Jordan from Geestemünde via Cardiff to Singapore, Rangoon and Rotterdam – the rocky coast visible in the background suggests that the painting was done off Cardiff. In 1898, she was sold to the shipping company J.C. Klingenberg & Co. Bremen. Seized by the U.S. in 1917, she was unnamed and sailed henceforth under the name Montauk until she sank near the Solomon Islands in 1920. Pawlik, Von der Weser in die Welt, II, p. 516 f.
