Male nudes. 1929. tempera/paper/painting cardboard, signed a. dated Marées lower left 59,5 x 55,5 cm, verso on back cardboard label handwritten inscribed by another hand, furthermore on further label handwritten inscribed by the artist: As a heartfelt Christmas greeting 1952 for my dear Fritz – the one drawing from Florence, Dec. 1952 Horst von Marées, minimal color losses, framed under passepartout behind glass 100 x 84 cm, passepartout cutout 58 x 53 cm, unopened.- Horst von Marées, trained at the academies of Weimar and Munich and distantly related to the painter Hans von Marées, maintained an apartment with studio in Florence from 1927. Here, in addition to landscapes and commissioned portraits, he also created aesthetic-figurative compositions. According to the designation on the reverse, which goes back to a letter from December 1952, the painting was shown in 1932 in the exhibition of the Villa Massimo in Rome and was selected by the Reich Ministry of Propaganda, along with 19 other works by the artist, for an exhibition that was planned for October 1939 in Rio, but was not to take place – his works were also removed from public collections (Museum Folkwang) and ostracized in 1937 as part of the Degenerate Art campaign.
