115th Auction - Carpeting

12. July, 2013

Fri, 12th of July from 14:00 pm

No trace of summer slump – With the finest summer weather and a well-filled auction hall, very good bids and a high sales rate were achieved. In most departments, only a few items remained for post-auction sales.

Two portraits attributed to the German painter and founder of the Düsseldorf School of Painting, Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow, were offered at a limit of €3,600 each and were highly contested upon calling. The portrait of a young girl in a blue dress with a star-embellished hem, head thoughtfully inclined, gazing into an indefinite distance past the viewer, was sold for €14,000. Meanwhile, the bust portrait of a young girl in an aubergine dress with an ivy wreath in her hair, looking directly at the viewer, fetched a bid of €28,000.

A large seascape, showing fishermen in the reeds under atmospheric moonlight, captured in oil on cardboard by the German landscape painter Louis Douzette, was offered with a limit of €4,500 and sold for €5,000. Douzette spent much time on the Baltic coast, on Rügen and the Darß, after 1860. In 1878, he traveled to Paris, where he became strongly influenced by the French plein-air painting of the Barbizon realistic school. As expected, the two color lithographs from the sought-after series ‘Le Cirque’ by Marc Chagall found their buyers. ‘The Green Clown’ from the circus suite ‘Le Cirque’ of 1967 achieved a bid of €1,600, and ‘The Clown in the Ring’ sold for €2,400.

Significant increases were noted in the Asian objects. A Chinese jade amulet, depicting a man with a plant in his hands, was escalated from a limit of €150 to €24,000 through an exciting bidding war. The bid was won by a Chinese customer. In the bidding battle for a large Chinese warrior figure, a German collector ultimately prevailed, securing the piece for €17,000 (limit €150).

The porcelain department also featured a wide selection in this auction. Besides dishes, large services from Meissen, KPM, and Royal Copenhagen, figurative porcelain from Hentschel, Nymphenburg, and others were offered. The figures of the monkey orchestra from Meissen were mostly sold with very good increases. Additionally, Russian porcelains and Italian majolica were called and found very good sales. The ‘Tribute Penny’ from KPM Berlin, 1914, in polychrome painting on white porcelain based on a template of the painting ‘The Tribute Penny’ by Titian, was sold for €4,800.

The jewelry department included a diverse range of items, including low-limit coral jewelry and some high-quality brilliant pieces. An appealing sapphire-diamond rose ring, Russia before 1870, now delights its new owner for a price of €3,600. Nearly all of the approximately 370 jewelry items were sold.

Consignments for the upcoming auction on September 20 and 21, 2013, are already being gladly accepted.
