134th Auction - Jewellery

25. February, 2017

Sat, 25th of February from 10:00 am

For a narwhal tusk (Lot 4223) with a pommel, seven bidders quickly drove the price from €1,500 to €10,125. A large silver centerpiece in the shape of a caravel (Lot 652) from Neresheimer in Hanau was raised from €10,000 to €18,750, while a magnificent silver ewer (Lot 786) changed hands for €4,875 (starting price €3,000).

For an early work by the Bielefeld painter Hans Sagewka (Lot 1762), 10 telephone lines had to be reserved. The bidding war started at €1,500 and ended with a winning bid of €6,875 in favor of a Bielefeld collector. Lot 1551 also sold for €6,875, although this unidentified and unsigned landscape started at just €100. A typical Wopfner (Lot 1328) featuring a dramatic Chiemsee scene was passed on just under the starting price at €5,300.

Among the sculptures, a rare bronze from the Gladenbeck foundry stood out, depicting the famous equestrian statue of the Great Elector by Andreas Schlüter on a magnificent marble pedestal. The final price of €5,000 was quite reasonable, given the starting price of €3,500.

Among the collector’s items auctioned on Saturday morning, Lots 4486 and 4487 garnered particular interest. Numerous phone lines were again in use when two letters by Napoleon came up for bid, one of which included the envelope with a seal. Together, these two autographs fetched €10,625.

The auction house has often witnessed surprises with Asian items, and this time was no exception. Two inconspicuous collections (Lots 4124 and 4144) that started at just €80 ended up selling for €3,750 and €4,500, respectively. Among the furniture, a magnificent Baroque hall cabinet (Lot 5002) fetched the expected €8,125, while an exceptional decorative cabinet (Lot 4258) with beautifully painted porcelain panels found a buyer for €6,875. (All prices include the buyer’s premium).

The upcoming May auction already promises some special pieces. Consignments are requested by early April.
